Many new beekeepers opt for the beginner's kit of assembled beehives and tools, but you can also make your own professional beehives. Before making up your mind to assemble, be sure to strictly follow the size of the production drawings to process, if the size of the deviation, then wait until the new "new owner" move in, the location of the hive will also appear serious deviation.
Three Polpular Beehive
Lang's beehive is the most widely used beehive so far, especially suitable for beginners. In the middle of the 19th century, Lorenzo Reverend Langstros invented and patented it. The utility model is characterized in that the movable nest spleen is applied, and bees can make honeycomb on the nest spleen. Langstroth beehives can also be stacked together to improve space utilization.
Component structure of Langstroth beehive
- Roof ------ rain proof, equivalent to the roof of the house
- Inner cover ------ The inner cover is located between the inside of the beehive and the top cover, which is used to insulate heat and prevent the frame containing the nest spleen inside the beehive from sticking to the top cover. When collecting honey, the inner cover can be used with a bee evader.
- The middle honey reservoir------mainly used as a place for bees to make honey
- Block the queen bee partition ------ only worker bees are allowed to pass through, isolate the queen bee and the male bee from the honey source, and prevent the queen bee from laying eggs on it. Not everyone chooses to use the partition.
- Live frame bee spleen -The live frame bee spleen is placed in the honeycomb in parallel. The size of the live frame is adjusted according to different beehives. Usually, the base plate made of beeswax or plastic is used to facilitate the bees to build honeycomb on it. The function of honeycomb is to place young bees, pollen, newly picked honey, or honey.
- The nursery layer of young bees ------ the nursery layer is larger than the middle honey reservoir, and the nest spleen is also larger. The queen bee lays eggs here. The bee is a matriarchal society. The responsibility for feeding young bees is to look after the bees.
- Bottom layer ------The bottom layer of the honeycomb is usually made of solid plank or transparent and visible baffle.
2. Horizontal top bar beehive
The history of the horizontal top bar hive is earlier than that of the Langmuir hive. The long pole placed on the top of the beehive replaces the box of the Langmuir beehive. This structure does not require a base, but requires a shelf for placing crossbars. This design has some unique advantages: no need to install a heavy base, and no need to laboriously assemble the bee spleen inside the hive. The biggest advantage is that there is no need to lift the hive. If the Langmuir beehive is used, it is sometimes necessary to move the heavy hive.
However, there are some inconvenient places in this kind of beehive. Because there is no movable bee spleen, it is impossible to use a centrifuge to separate honey when collecting honey. Therefore, the original beehive will be destroyed while collecting honey. As a result, bees will make new honeycombs every year. In general, compared with the Langmuir beehive, the horizontal top bar beehive needs to check the bee status more frequently to prevent overcrowding.
3. Warré beehive
The inventor of Wally's hive is Emily Worley, produced in the middle of the 20th century, is another kind of apical beehive. The top pole is not placed horizontally on the top, but is set up inside the box. This kind of beehive has no nest spleen and base, and bees make hives on the set pole.
In addition, beekeepers who use Wally usually increase the number of layers at the bottom rather than at the top, because this is more consistent with the habits of bees.
The three most widely used beehives described above have their advantages and disadvantages. Beginners should still choose a hive suitable for their own situation according to local conditions, and construct strictly according to the size of the drawing. Careless construction will cause size deviation, which is not conducive to operation, but also affects the care of bees. It will also make bees angry and increase the probability of being stung.
Decorate your beehive
Painting the beehive is beneficial to the maintenance of wood. The beehives are usually painted white to reflect sunlight. Now people prefer to paint the beehives in various colors. The temperature in the south is relatively high, so it is suitable to paint the beehive in light color. The water-based paint will blend well with the wood. When painting, you only need to paint the outside, not the inside of the beehive.
