Why every beekeeper should start with a Langstroth hive

   When you first start beekeeping, there is a lot to learn. One thing you don't need to worry about is what kind of hive you should buy. Really! I recommend that all beekeepers start with a Langstroth style hive. If you want to try other hive styles, that's fine, but do it when you're used to beekeeping, not when you're just starting out.

Five reasons to keep beekeeping with Langstroth-style hives:

• 1. Most beekeeping books, YouTube videos and blogs are for Langstroth beehives. It is difficult to find information on other styles of beehives. This may not seem like a big deal now, but when you're a new beekeeper and you've had bees for two months and you need to solve a vague problem, you'll wish you had a Lanstrasse hive.
• 2. Most beekeepers use Langstroth hives, so when you ask your bee association for help, look for a mentor or go to a bee forum, if you have a Langstroth hive, there will be more people to help you.
• 3. It's easy to find equipment in Lanceros's Hive. All major beekeeping supply sites sell equipment for Lanceros beehives. The section on whether they will sell other beehives will vary.
• 4. It is easy to operate. The Langstroth frame has 4 sides to prevent the honeycomb from collapsing. This might not seem like a big deal, but if you take a heavy hive off the top plate, it's hot, and you tilt the shelf 10 degrees to the right, there's a good chance your hive will fall off. Reattaching to the frame is simple using rubber straps with the Langstrasse frame, but reattaching is nearly impossible using the top bar.
• 5. Langstroth beehives encourage honey production and healthy bees. Some beekeepers say other hive styles are best for keeping bees healthy. However, I have spoken to beekeepers who have bred Varroa mite-resistant bees and keep thousands of hives. They all use Lanstroth's hives. I believe bees are healthy in other types of hives, but your bees will be healthy and happy in a Longstrasse hive. Also, I've seen healthy bees in an old refrigerator and a large cardboard box.
